Federal officials say that they have broken up two sizable drug operations with connections to Austin. A total of 37 people were arrested last week on drug trafficking and money laundering charges based upon indictments that were handed down earlier this month, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The two indictments charged over 40 people with possession, distribution, and conspiracy to possess methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana and heroin with intent to distribute. Government officials say that some of the drugs were imported from Mexico by concealing them in hidden compartments of various vehicles. They were then driven to a body shop in Austin owned by one of those arrested. The vehicles were then dismantled. From that point, the drugs were prepared for distribution locally in the Austin area, as well as to points in other states. According to neighbors, there was nothing about the body shop that would have led them to suspect a drug or other illegal operation. And federal agents say that it began as a legitimate auto repair shop before allegedly becoming involved in the drug trade.

Drugs were also allegedly being imported through the Rio Grande Valley, hidden inside vehicles, including 18-wheelers.

Officials claim that in the course of the investigation, they seized multiple shipments of drugs, including cocaine and marijuana, as well as over $1,000,000 in cash, which they say represented the proceeds of the drug transactions. The defendants are now facing sentences on the drug charges of between five years and life in prison. The money laundering charges could result in up to 20 years of incarceration.

A statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office claims that the organization targeted in the busts was responsible for the distribution of over 50 kilograms (over 100 pounds) of methamphetamine and more than 50 kilograms of cocaine per month. One article suggests that the drug operation is related to the Knights Templar, a Mexican drug cartel which allegedly rules most of the Mexican state of Michoacan. According to reports, the operation was well structured and organized, with decisions being made by the Mexican leaders.
