I just completed my first year of graduate school in the School Psychology program at Iona College. My GPA is a 3.71, something that I never thought I would be able to achieve after my previous academic setbacks as a result of my TBI.

In November of 2012, I was senior at Oswego State University, and a member of the collegiate Cheerleading Team. While practicing my standing-back tuck for an upcoming Basketball game, I didn’t follow through with the complete flip, and landed on my head on the hardwood floor of the gym. I was sent to the hospital and diagnosed with a concussion. Following this incident, my schoolwork did not reach the level I was accustomed to. Luckily, I had only one semester left until I graduation, and the coursework was easy enough, and my professors familiar enough, to allow for my graduation.

Before my TBI, I had taken the LSAT and applied to multiple Law Schools. I received acceptance to Albany Law School, New York Law School, and Pace Law School in the following months. I decided to go to Pace Law School since it was close to home. Immediately upon attending my first class at Pace, I felt like I was lagging behind my classmates– not comprehending the work, and often forgetting assignments and due dates. This showed by my low scores on my Final Exams following my first semester (it turns out that C’s actually don’t get degrees). So, I took action by seeing a professional to assess my intellectual abilities. She diagnosed me with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and ADHD. I began psychiatric treatment as well as therapy, but the treatments did not have effects that were timely enough to help me succeed in my second semester at law school.

I was academically dismissed from Pace Law School in the Spring of 2014, over $60,000 in tuition and expenses were gone, and I was told I would not be able to return, or apply for re-admittance, for at least another 2 years.

So, I spent the summer of 2014 dedicating most of my time to studying for the GREs, hoping that I would be accepted into a Psychology program. And I did get accepted, and succeeded, in the Psychology Program. Ironically, the program I am in caters to helping students with intellectual disabilities, students like me, many of which have suffered TBIs, and just need assistance and time to achieve their full potential.
